Domestic Violence
Domestic violence is when someone repeatedly takes advantage of their partner, whether it’s through physical, sexual, emotional and/or financial abuse. However, it is very common for these individuals to also hurt other members in the house, including children and pets. In the beginning of a relationship, abusers may be very loving, but the abuse often starts small and gets worse over time. They may be able to act normal in public, making the abuse less noticeable to outsiders. Abusers also usually try to convince their victim(s) that their actions are not abusive, making it harder for the victim to leave. SUD and other mental health concerns, if present, can make these situations even more difficult.
1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced domestic violence, and it happens to people from all walks of life. No matter what, it is never your fault if you are being abused. Please visit our Get Help Now page if you need immediate support.
