As part of a comprehensive training program designed to help primary care providers and staff deliver evidence-based care to patients with substance use disorder (SUD), the center has added two training modules: Pregnancy and Reproductive Care for Patients with SUD and Alcohol Use Disorder. Both offer the option of registering for continuing education credits.

The Pregnancy and Reproductive Care module, delivered by Neil Seligman, MD, MS, and Cassie Leonard, MD, covers trends, screening, toxicology, medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), and withdrawal symptoms, among other topics. It also reviews symptoms and treatment for neonatal abstinence syndrome with information on the incidence in rural communities.

The Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) module, delivered by Gloria Baciewicz, MD, discusses the prevalence of AUD in rural and urban areas and addresses common barriers in rural communities and ways of overcoming them. It reviews best practices for screening and treatment and levels of concern and care for patients.

The training curriculum was developed through a pilot program in rural Appalachian New York State.
